We took another walk through London today. And once again, sun and blue sky! It seems it only comes out when I’m out for pictures. I wanted to take the look of the other photo I took of Big Ben with the sun rays and apply it to todays photos as well.

As many of you already know, I recently took a little time off to welcome the arrival of our baby girl Mia Capri. She was born on September 27th at 3:49pm. She was 8lbs 15oz and 21 inches long. Oddly enough she was born 13 days after mommy’s birthday and 13 days before daddy’s birthday! Mommy is doing great since the birth. Mia has been a wonderful baby, sleeping regularly and very content. Here a few few pictures from the hospital!

In the world of photography there’s a guy name Seshu. He has what seems like countless blogs about photography and he probably tweets more than Twitter themselves. He was interviewed by another known name in the photography world, Dane Sanders. During the interview Seshu was asked if there are any photographers that you admire. I know that it’s a long list for Seshu. I’m honored that the one photographer, “that no one knows,” he mentioned was me. It was really unexpected and I truly feel grateful and appreciative. It’s at about 24 minutes in.

I went over to my step sisters home last week to take some photos of my baby niece Madison. While setting up for the photo, Madison’s big sister Sarah decided to get in front of the camera and start posing! This was just completely random! You never know what kids will do next.

This wasn’t easy to do, but it has to be done. Kelley and I love our condo. But over the last 8 months we’ve been thinking about moving to another part of the state. Many factors have played into this decision. And now it’s time to give it a try. If you know anyone looking for an amazing condo in North Haven, in a small desirable complex with a pool, here it is! I’ve done a lot of work to the place, including just finishing the master bath redo, new living room carpet, and plenty of painting. And how about these pictures for the listing?!?! What a night… By pure coincidence Vanessa and David’s wedding is my official 200th wedding! I got to spend the night with my wife Kelley by my side assisting me (and she took a few photos!). Here’s the midnight moment!

Reality Check

WOW. This really made me want to speak out. I know it’s an old article, but it seems to just keep coming around. I saw this a while ago and tried to keep my cool, but I just read it again: Wedding Photographers are apparently the most overpaid people in America! And ANYONE can do it!!!! According to MarketWatch. Anyone can be a high paying wedding photographer. Wow.

So let’s talk briefly about what it costs to be a professional wedding photographer. My second photographer here is looking to buy his own equipment. Just to start off with the basics he was up to $8,000. Imagine the cost of what I carry. Oh, and I have to insure all of it. Then there’s vehicle expenses, commissions for running credit cards, equipment repairs, I spent $1200 on postage this year (postage!!!), continuing education, computer and software upgrades, hard drives, hard drives, hard drives, it costs to make albums, paying staff… I really could go on. Oh wait! providing for my family? Putting food on our table and the discount outlet clothes on our back? A professional photographer doesn’t have a “real job” during the week so we have to pay our own health care for our family, save for retirement, and hope for a weeks vacation that comes out of our pocket. I did 25 weddings this year and my expenses were double the average 2 person family income in Connecticut (according to census.gov)! Overpaid? My prices go up next year because I was underpaid this year.

For the other side of the story, the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers did an awesome survey of photographers recently. I know when I started my business, everyone I knew thought I just worked weekends. I was often asked “What do you do during the week?” Alot more!

Here’s the perception

Here’s reality: 70 hours a week through our 6-7 month season and 40 hours a week off season. There is no mention in here regarding time with family.

It’s plain and simple. If I didn’t have the expenses that I have, or spend that much time getting everything done, I’d be out of business.

I’ve been waiting to put this image together since getting back from Aruba. It is a 360 degree photo taken at the Alta Vista Chapel in Aruba. It took 14 images to make the panorama. Then a few photoshop tricks later, a little planet.

Ok, a lot of bloggin to catch up on! I was gone for a week with no phone or e-mail. I’ve spent 3 days catching up on everything I missed. I have a few blog posts coming, one with an awesome announcement! But first, our new favorite place… Aruba.

We took a waverunner out for an hour. 41mph on water is insane.

Where we stayed.

There were iguana’s roaming the beach!

We had an awesome dinner at the Flying Fishbone. We ate with out feet in the water!

We took a snorkle trip out to a reef and then to a 400ft shipwreck.

Just about every night we sat on the beach and watched the sunset.

Big Mama’s! Possibly the best fish sandwich we ever had.

For a day we rented a Jeep and went off road to the other side of the island where there is basically nothing.

People piled rocks everywhere.

I know I’ve been absent from blogging lately. I can’t even tell you how busy it has been here. Finding time to be in front of the computer is hard! This week I have to finish up production on 1 (maybe 2) weddings, start a wedding, do 1 shoot, be at an all day charity event, have 4 appointments, finish 3 albums, give a one on one RE:Workshop, a few orders to take care of, and currently 12 e-mails that require my attention. I’m tired just thinking about it. Or maybe it’s just 1am.

This afternoon I got one of the best voicemails I ever received! I really hope to get their permission to post it on the blog.

What Happens At 2am

It’s the wedding season, which means my office is the light on in the neighborhood at 2am. As I was yawning I was getting ready to shut things down here. My cat Reeses was sitting on the floor at the office door yawning as well. Somehow a lightbuld appeared over my head. I grab my camera and came up with an intro to all my videos.

The Deafening Roar Above

Everyone in the neighborhood came out to see what was flying overhead. This jet was all you can hear! It looped around our area at least twice and made some seriously loud noise. This quick video is when it quieted down and left the area. I made a phone call to a friend to see what was going on. Apparently they are just doing some tests! Yeah… let’s test and see if we can get people to come out of their air conditioned homes!

Some Things Just Make Your Day

Today has been really busy here in the office. I’m only half way through todays work and I’m headed out the door. Suddenly the door bell rang. UPS delivers at 1pm, and it’s 2:30, so it can’t be them. I opened the door and there was a delivery from Edible Arrangements! I thought, they probably have the wrong place or it’s for my wife. Then the delivery guy asked for me! How nice! I wondered who it’s from! Before I even got it to the kitchen I read the note. It was for me and my second shooter Greg from Christine and Gerald who’s wedding we shot this past weekend! I was just beside myself.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’m having trouble typing and I’m eating the fruit at the same time. Where did I put that chocolate sauce?
