This first one with the green door was directly across the street from the Makeup Show. This is on 18th street between 6th and 7th. This shot was about the 5th shot I took. As soon as I got it we moved on. I really didn’t want to stay in one place for too long so that we drew a crowd. I wasn’t really sure what the laws were about being painted in public. She’s topless!


Two doors down I saw this graffiti door that had the blue and white on top and black on the bottom. It just fit her perfectly. So about 5 shots there and we went to the end of the block at 6th and 18th. I’ll continue with this in a moment.

I put the photos out of the order they were taken. The photos with the lamps hanging from the ceiling was later in the day and a total case of being at the right place at the right time. There was a fire escape that we wanted to get on (which is like illegal or something?). The shop on the first floor didn’t have any access and the building was all apartments. While standing there, the owner of the property happened to walk up to the entry door. We asked to get in but she couldn’t let us on the fire escapes. She did invite us in to see the hall, and I was hoping for a cool elevator (which didn’t happen). I walked in the door and looked up to see lamps hanging from the ceiling. Turns out the property owner is an artist herself. We got a few shots and we were off again.


Ok, back to being at 18th and 6th. It was busy there with plenty of traffic and people. We all were on the same page on what we wanted to get for a photo. Pedestrians crossing, a taxi in the background, and the city. I opted for the angle just because of the position of the sun. I went about two parked cars in down the street. When the lights were right and traffic was right Sindy went out into the street and literally stopped traffic. Pedestrians weren’t even crossing. Our makeup artist Jinny was telling people to walk and I had the owner of MEHRON Makeup holding my bare 580ex with a Radio Popper attached. It took about 4 traffic lights to get these two shots. Literally about 2 or 3 shots were all I could get off before we had to get out of the street. The first three lights didn’t have a good combo of people and taxi cabs.




It wasn’t hard to convince the food vendor to let Sindy into his truck.

I was across the street shooting with the scaffolding you see in the background and our makeup artist said “hey there’s a motorcycle over there and a guy is about to get on it.” As soon as I saw the sun light over there I told her to run over and stop him from leaving! He just asked that his wife not see the photos! I didn’t even see the Adorama sign until later that night. Maybe I should send them the pic?


The father and son walking by photo is one of our favorites. I saw the doorway and I asked Sindy to basically hide in it and let people walk by, hopefully not seeing her. People stopped anyway but we kept telling everyone to please walk by. I just looked through the lens and waited for the right timing. It was a slow shutter speed at f22, 50 ISO done handheld.

The metal doorway was just something that we came across. We were about to head back to the Makeup Show and I just wanted to take a few more. I had to black out the upper right area from the flash reflecting off the door. Otherwise this is all a 580ex with a Lastolite soft box.



Ok, Day2, Times Square. It was our only goal and as far as we are concerned the only option. We were prepared to run from the police, run in different directions, whatever. Seriously, that was the conversation on the ride up. I’m surprised the cab driver didn’t report our conversation. We took a cab up to the block next to the TKTS stands in Times Square. Sindy was covered with a long cardigan, but people were still curious as we were getting setup around the corner. The plan was to run into place take a few shots and leave. I really wanted to be down the street more where the ABC studios are, but there were about 40 cops there. No exaggeration on that. So we walked into this grated area and a security person instantly came over to me. What clearly gave us away was 1) my light box on a monopod 2) we had a videographer with a 7D on like a glide stick thing. So we were a bit of a crew. The security guy only asked us how long we were going to be. I told him no more than 5 minutes if that’s ok. He said sure! People were instantly starting to look. Then Sindy took the robe off and everyone started to look and gather around us.
I took two rounds of shots. One with a 16-35 2.8 and my 70-200 2.8. Honestly, as I was taking them, I wasn’t confident that I did them justice. It was a clouded over day, a very dull light type of day. I knew the flash was going to have to do it’s thing. We just had to be quick and get out of there.





We then went down into the Subway to take the 1 back to 18th street. We tried to sneak a shot in there but 3 cops came over asking for a permit. I just said sorry, we are just catching the 1 train. It was settled, they left, we left. I told everyone to get on a train and stay to the back of the car. We managed to get 4 seats at the back to ourselves. Before our stop I had Sindy get up and stand at the pole. I took 4 shots without even looking through the camera. Needless to say it caught some attention. Sindy, who is an absolute sweetheart by the way, apologized to everyone! Then it was our stop and we got off. Sindy had to be back to the show.
