The latest International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers contest results have been released! I only entered a few this time, and a few made it through!

WPPI Print Competition Results

This year was a good year for me in the print competition. Last year I had 1 award. This year 3! And one of them was apparently very good.

My top scoring image was “Nerves.” This is the image I won the Court of Honor with for the Connecticut PPA awards. After the awards were posted I ended up meeting one of the judges. I mentioned that this image scored an 87. Believe me when I say that’s a great score. He said there were about 700 images in the Photojournalism category and only about 30 of them scored this high. He congratulated me and said it’s something I should be very proud of.

“Her Father Awaits” scored an 80. I did not see this get judged so I don’t know what any of the comments were.

And one that I had hopes for, even though it didn’t do well in other competitions and people questioned my entering it, “Ceiling Reflections” also scored an 80.

Once again I took a lot away from this competition and I hope to totally BRING IT next year.

CPPA Court of Honor Award

This was totally unexpected.

During the Connecticut Professional Photographers Associations annual convention, I sat in on my favorite part, the print competition. The competition is judged by certified Professional Photographers Association judges that painstakingly look at every image in the competition and score them. They judge on the overall image, composition, work done to it, print quality, presentation, and more. I’ll admit I had some print issues this year. That’s not an excuse. I fell short on 3 images being at the level I wanted to be at by literally 1 point out of total 100 (I scored three 79′s). 1 Point! One image did make it, scoring an 80. But to me that just meant I could have done better. That’s just me being hard on myself and wanting to push myself further.

Then came the awards banquet Saturday night. All the judges awards were being handing out for, honestly, some amazing prints. Really unbelievable in some cases. Then came the top category of awards. The Court of Honor. This is simply for the best image in it’s category, period. Even if it scored an 80. The judges go back and look at all the images in the category again and narrow it down to their choice of the best image.

This year I’m honored to say that it was one of my images titled “Nerves” that took the most prestigious award given to a connecticut photographer in the weddings category, the Court Of Honor. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the judges.

Wedding Photography Directory Top 10!

I’ve been pretty lucky in the Wedding Photography Directory, Creative Wedding Photo Contest in the past. And once again I managed to pull something off! Since the contest is a “creative” contest I tend to enter things that could be considered creative to the point of abstract. And that’s what I did this time. And it paid off! Here’s the image that made the top 10:

Usually when people look at this image I can see the look of confusion on their face. Some have figured it out, some don’t see it at all. I stood back with my big zoom lens and focused in on the screen inside the videographers cameras eye piece. I had a small view of the back side of the brides face. The black areas are of the video camera. The tan areas are the alter of the church.

I wasn’t the only one surprised this made the top ten. The Wedding Photography Directory was surprised too! Click here to see the winners and finalists.

The latest International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers contest results were released! I have to say I didn’t do too bad. I didn’t make the top 20 list this time, the last time I was 8th. But I had 8 images place in their categories! I was surprised how many of my reflection photos made it.

I know I’ve been absent from blogging lately. I can’t even tell you how busy it has been here. Finding time to be in front of the computer is hard! This week I have to finish up production on 1 (maybe 2) weddings, start a wedding, do 1 shoot, be at an all day charity event, have 4 appointments, finish 3 albums, give a one on one RE:Workshop, a few orders to take care of, and currently 12 e-mails that require my attention. I’m tired just thinking about it. Or maybe it’s just 1am.

This afternoon I got one of the best voicemails I ever received! I really hope to get their permission to post it on the blog.

Earlier this year I was accepted into the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers. There are a number of photographers in this organization that are not only well known in the photography community, but ones that I personally look up to as well. They include (but certainly not limited to) David Wittig, Huy Nguyen, JK Dallas, and my old friend Mat McGraw.

I entered their summer contest not knowing what to expect. I certainly did not expect to place 8th overall!

Here are the images that placed in their category:

The first category of “Framing The Subject” was my most saught after category. A lot of my work is all about framing the subject in the right composition.

Here’s logo update #2! For the second year in a row I placed #1 in the New Haven Advocate Readers Poll! Clicking the link will send you to my results listing.

My interview is at my results listing. There are some things in the interview that either weren’t really accurate, or just not really what I was hoping for to shine through in my interview. Here’s the interview below with the points I was hoping to convey in { }.

“Richard Esposito’s REPhotoDesign is leading the way in documenting the special moments in people’s lives, especially weddings. Esposito offers a hybrid package: He takes pictures and records short video clips of key moments in the ceremony {actually it’s throughout the entire wedding day}. (That’s just one of 15 packages total.){There are 5 Hybrid packages available to my clients}.He makes sure that his customers have many options available to them so they can remember the most precious moments of their lives. Plus, he makes back-ups of the images he has captured and gives customers a copy of the negatives. And then, he keeps an entire set of his work on a site separate from his house. In other words, he’s got you covered. With four Emmys as a video editor for NBC during a seven-year career there {7 year career in television but only 3 years at the NBC affiliate WHDH in Boston}, it’s easy to see that Esposito brings hard work and creativity to his business. He even holds “get-to-know-you-sessions,” working with couples to get a feel for how they deal with the camera, even helping one future husband practice looking into the camera lens instead of off into the distance, helping to ensure the couple got the best shots of their best day.”

I thought her discussion of my storage techniques for my photographs was a very common piece of information to include… it is something that all photographers do, but apparently she felt that I was unique because I safeguard my clients precious memories.

There was no mention of a few things I had talked about during the interview that I hoped would have gone into my bio. The things that I was hoping to stand out were: the weddings and engagement shoots that I do across the US, as well as my portrait and commercial services being launched.

It’s that time of year again! The annual Wedding Photography Directory Wedding Photo Contest is waiting for your vote! I submitted 3 images this year and all 3 made it to the top 100 images. I’ve been watching the Daily Leaders page and one of my images is always in there. So go vote! And be honest… don’t just vote for my stuff, there are some other very talented photographers there.

WEDCOMP 3rd Place! and 7th and 11th!

There’s a newer photo competition in town called WEDCOMP that’s been earning some good credibility. The judges are photographers who are well respected in the photography community. I entered a couple of images from this past year and one of them captured 3rd place in the Getting Ready category! I entered the image, then realized I sent the wrong version in! Check WEDCOMP for what I sent in, otherwise here is the version I meant to send in. The only difference is the now missing pillow and a little color toning.

Judges comments: “The warm tone of this photo and the loose composition are captivating. I particularly responded to the bridesmaid’s arms in motion. Since the composition is somewhat static, the movement of the bridesmaids surrounding the dress is beautiful. The photographer shows off his/her skills by backing off and composing the photograph carefully. It’s a scene setter as well as a storytelling moment.”

***UPDATE***
I didn’t even look! I also have a 7th and 11th in receptions! Here are the two shots!

Judges comments: “Everyones’ face is great in this moment. Great capture of peak emotion. Very nice B&W conversion.”

I’m looking forward to the next competition!

Accolade of Excellence

I briefly talked about this in my prior post from Vegas. I was awarded an Accolade of Excellence for my print “Diamond Tree.” This was my first year entering the competition and I really had no idea what I was up against, nor did I feel like I knew what I was doing. So to have one image score high enough to be awarded is awesome! Although I really wish I could do it all over again, I’m thrilled to have been noticed. I’m looking forward to next year! Last year it was #2, This year it’s #1! The New Haven Advocate Readers’ Poll was announced and R.E.PhotoDesign was given FIRST PLACE! There was no multiple choice or anything.
